Oedipus was born into royalty between Laius, King of Thebes and Jocaster his queen. From the beginning of Oedipus' birth his life was clouded with the presage of disaster; for Apollo's oracle had nothing but ill to foretell of him: He was destined to kill his father, and to become his own mother's husband. Of course, to kill their infant would put blight upon their family and so they enlisted their trust into a shepherd with orders to abandon it on the mountainside. The shepherd couldn't bear to leave the child alone and is brought to the King of Corinth, who, being childless, gladly welcomed an infant and adopted it for his own. Oedipus grows up to hear the prophecy and goes in seach for the truth.
